Two ingredients for optimal response to surprise

David Allen says that when you deal with surprise, “there are two major ingredients for an optimal response: (1) actively focused engagement, and (2) having a clear deck.”

  1. So true about the clear deck. Made all the difference to me in the last year, keeping my inbox clear and my project list current.

  2. Absolutely-focus and a clear deck are critical.

    Also, I find that training yourself to slow down and gain perspective by going into a meditative state before plunging into action is critical.

    The natural fight-or-flight response doesn’t work well when you need to do the hard intellectual work of prioritizing and planning.
