  • "Notes" on the iPhone

    Hi Everyone,
I've recently gotten into the GTD methodology after hearing David speak at my school. I've been using Things on both my MacBook and iPhone, and it works great. I'm looking to be able to sync notes between my laptop and iPhone though for packing lists, idea lists, etc. that don't fit into the "todo" area. What do you iPhone users use for this?

It's frustrating that the iPhone doesn't sync the Mail.app notes to the Notes app. This would work great for this purpose!

    Thanks!

If I want to capture something on the iPhone to put into my system, I often send myself an email from the iPhone. That gets the message into my inbox so that I know it will get processed soon.

There are several iPhone applications out there that may help with using GTD on the iPhone and the Mac. Check out this post from Kelly Forrister about GTD and the iPhone for more information and ideas.

    Good luck.
    Michael

You've got a few good choices:

1 -- E-mail from the phone, as crouse suggested.
2 -- Use Jott to send a e-mail via your voice.
3 -- Use an app/page like Nozbe, Toodledo, etc.
4 -- SMS to Twitter to one of the compatible services.

I personally use Nozbe and it works GREAT with the iPhone. I can e-mail an action directly into it, Jott an action directly into it, or just type it in via their iPhone page. It works very well. It also integrates with Twitter, so you can just send a specially formatted SMS to Twitter and it will automatically become an action.

I hate that Jott now forces you to pay ($4/month), but it's well worth it in my opinion.

I typically e-mail or directly enter an action if I have time and I'm sitting down, or else use Nozbe if I'm in the car. Flexibility is the key.

I guess I should specify. I'm not looking so much for the capture stage here. I already have that working great with Things. I'm looking more for something that I can sync to keep long term notes I want to keep around, things like packing lists, restaurants I enjoyed eating out when I'm out of town, Things I want to buy, Books I want to read.

The ideal situation, as I originally stated, would be if the iPhone notes app would sync with the Mail.app Notes. Since Apple doesn't offer this, I'm looking for something different.

You might like to have a look at www.markspace.com. I have used their Fliq apps because I already have their Notes application on my mac from my Palm days. The existing MissingSync for iPhone is pretty hopeless as its `sync' is only one way. They are talking about a new one that sounds better

          Coming Soon
          Version 2.0
The Missing Sync for iPhone 2.0 will sync notes, tasks and documents with between your iPhone and Mac or Windows PC. All owners of The Missing Sync for iPhone will receive a free upgrade to 2.
I can't see anymore detail than that though!

I use omnifocus for stuff that needs to move back and forth between the iphone and the mac.

For stuff that gets created on the mac that I just need to look at (not edit) on the iphone, I heartily recommend datacase.

I had the exact same frustration - really mystifying why Apple can't have the Calendar work the same on the iPhone too. I've discovered Notebook by
Appigo, which has been working great. (If you use Toodledo, it syncs with Notes on that.)
