  • UCT for Ladies

This is a question for the ladies out there (those of us without shirt pockets, hip pockets, and sometimes - no pockets!)

How is everyone managing keeping a means of collecting with you everywhere?

I still want to know this one too. No matter what the suggestion, it still means carrying something separately, like a bag or a notepad in your hand. I cannot wear a notepad - or even 3x5 cards - on one side of my chest in a pocket, neither will I wear cardboard over one half of my backside. I also do not always wear a jacket indoors, never mind one with a pocket that is big enough. I also refuse to wear a purse all the time. The closest thing that has worked is a phone case that has a small area where I can put post-it size pieces of paper. I clip it to my waist, if need be, hoping it doesn't look too much like a fanny pack. This is one of my biggest pet peeves.

      iPod Touch with Notes application.

Yeah, you need a small pocket or holster, but where do you keep your phone?

If it's impossible, then 'suffer for fashion', I guess. I've never understood why graceful lines trump practicality in the first place.

My UCT is a few file cards cut in half (3 x 2 1/2) and held together with a tiny binder clip, plus a stub pencil. All my clothes have pockets. I require them to have pockets. Why be helpless about a lack of pockets when we are the ones who choose our clothes?

          Uct

I use a group of small post it notes stuck to the back of my drivers license and a pen that fits in my wallet.

Do women really think it's workable to wear clothes without pockets?

I'm so glad I'm a guy - fashion requires so much less of us - especially as we get older - LOL.

The problem is that where guys put their UCTs is not a place where women usually want to. At least, I don't.

I use the notepad feature on my phone...recently upgraded to the LG enV for exactly that reason, but I used to use just a plain old flip-phone that was t9Word-enabled. It's pretty rare that I don't have my phone with me, even if I don't have any pockets (there's a funny photo from just before my best friend's wedding ceremony with me running around trying to coordinate the caterer and flowers with my phone tucked into the front of my bridesmaid dress ) and on the rare occasions I don't have it, I'm frequently doing something that would make it rude to capture anything anyway, like giving a presentation or standing up in aforementioned wedding.

I have one note in my notepad called "In" and I just add to it until I can empty that inbox later in the day. I don't have a palm or a smartphone, either, so I use the same feature to carry my "Errands" lists so that I never "stop in" at the grocery without the things I know I need.

I always have a bag with me while I'm out: it's a bit like a messenger bag, cross-shoulder type, and has compartments for everything I need, which includes water, sunglasses, wallet, car keys, and UCD. No problems there. When I'm in situ, at home or in the office, the UCD sits on my desk. No problems there either.

My UCD is a small but fat spiral-bound notebook, which I chose because the larger notebooks with fewer pages get loose and scrappy really quickly, and shed bits into my bag.

I'm a bit of an anomaly among women, I think, because I've always preferred wearing trousers (pockets!), I carry a big bag which holds all my stuff (never have to ask for a tissue or squint in the sunlight), and I wear sensible shoes. And I haven't worn pantihose in at least a decade.

It might sound flippant, but I really think that function is more important than form: I see no point in wearing uncomfortable or impractical clothes just to fit someone else's idea of what a woman should look like. Sure, I dress like a professional when I have to, but that doesn't include tight skirts, high heels, or hosiery. And it certainly doesn't include going bagless.

I rarely go anywhere without my handbag. It's got my phone, my cash and credit cards, keys, paper tissues, driving licence, spiral bound notebook, pens....

At home, my collection device is a couple of piles of scrap paper cut into A5 size, one upstairs, one downstairs, which can be scribbled on and thrown direct into an in-tray
