How to treat habits?

  • How to treat habits?

    For example, I want to take pills everyday at specific time until I finish reading it. Do I need to write this down on my trusted system? If yes, is it belong to next action list or calender? (BTW, I'm a person definitely to forget to take pills without someone tell me to)
    It is defined that Calendar is used as reminders of actions that have to happen on a specific day or time. In fact taking reading that book is not "have to do everyday".
    Is there any relative paragraph in Get Things Done book because I don't finish reading it yet.

    Set a reminder in your phone to go off when its time to take next dose. Works for me.

      I'd write it down if you are likely to forget and put it in calendar plus dated because it's time critical. For me I'd also add an alarm somewhere, either my phone or computer or both to remind me to go do the taking pills part.

      Esp. with medicines, some are not as effective if not taken at the right time so I'd consider it critical to have reminders in several places. Plus some meds cause you to forget stuff so again, reminders are good.

      Call it adapting GTD to meet your needs at a specific time.

        A friend of mine who takes a LOT of pills -- she's an organ transplant patient -- has a pill case with a built in clock. She can set as many alarms as necessary to make sure she takes everything at the right time.

        For other daily reminders, one alternative is a daily checklist.

          Daily Checklist

          You could use a checklist, including everything you want to do on a daily basis. It works for me.

            Habits that others can do

            Quick note on habits or things you do that could be taken over by others. Even if you know to do it and never need a checklist, having those sorts of checklists is valuable in case you are ill, injured (esp. if you end up in a hospital) or die. Someone can come in and know how to do all the various daily things you do without thinking. This can be a great source of comfort to the people left picking up the pieces.

            This came to my mind because one of my yearly review tasks is to review my notebook of such emergency procedures and put in updates and any new things that need to go in there. I hope no one ever has to use it but I sleep better knowing it's there just in case.

              I take a low does drug and found it hard to remember to take it at first. I added a reminder to my calendar (with an alarm) until I developed the habit.

                I have a reminder for my meds & vitamins because I'm also horrible at remembering to take them at the proper times. I have the reminder synced with my phone and my computer & laptop calender so I won't miss a dose.
