For those of you who get itchy sitting all day, have you considered walking while you work? One of our clients shared how they stay on the move at their desk. David posted a picture of it on Twitter yesterday. Since then, some of you have been writing asking, “How can I get that??” It’s called TrekDesk. It essentially turns a treadmill into a desk. We’re not affiliated with these guys, or endorsing this as a “GTD” solution, but some of you may find it helps your productivity to keep your body moving. The folks at TrekDesk seem to think so.
If you’re the “mover” type, would you use something like this?
Flylady.net had her husband rig her up a platform for her laptop years ago… she’s a woman to look up to and productively wise it’s a go, healthy, but @ almost $500.00….
well, rigging it up yourself seems just fine to me…. FlyLady.net has pictures of her on her site, of her on her treadmill — hers also wasn;t so cumbersome looking either. Just thought I’d let you know that , thanks.
I have been interested in this idea for over a year. Unfortunately I don’t have the space for a treadmill, but I recently rigged up a way of working while on an exercise bike. The idea came from a Dr. at the Mayo Clinic.

Looks good. I actually use a kybounder (http://www.kybun.ch/) which is a mat that supports you while you stand. You get to work the postural muscles and it keeps you awake. I have knee problems, so it means I can break up the day and do helpful exercise even though I’m stuck to a desk.
I’ve read about this before. Even walking slowly at about 2 mph (or maybe it was less) was enough for weight loss and stress reduction. It looks more comfortable than fidgeting or crossing/uncrossing the legs.

My sister-in-law just posted some great video instructions (that were picked up by Lifehacker) on how to build your own walking desk. Pretty cool!
I’m hoping to rig one up soon.

Comments deleted. Understandable and no hard feelings. To be expected really.
But, sorry to inconvenience you again by asking, but I’m curious. Have you had a humour bypass?
😉
This looks really cool! One of our favorite ways to stay productive during the work day is to take a break to get exercise – but I guess if you don’t need to take a break, you are just that much more productive, right?
Hi Ian–
Our humor is alive and well here at the David Allen Company. We found your comments to lean toward mean spirited, so we did not publish them.

I can say with much experience of using a treadmill desk that it does work.
We even have an online office walkers community over at http://officewalkers.ning.com/ for all related discussions on the topic of office walking 😛

Wow it’s a great idea for making this Trek Desk, Having a treadmill into your desk moving while working!! It’s really awesome and i was kind of exited wanting to have that kind of a desk. It’s kinda fun doing it at one time. Thanks a lot posting and giving an idea.
I tossed my mini-laptop up on my treadmill panel about a month ago and think there really is something to this. Freeing the mind with exercise is therapeutic – but strangely enough, working while moderately exercising puts my mind in a highly responsive mode that facilitates clear/deep thinking. Also my treadmill workouts have gone from ~25-35 mins to ~45 – 60 mins. The time just flys by, which is fantastic for the body ! I highly recommend trying this!
